WHY CLASS IS KICKING MY BUTT

Here is one of many conversations I had in my school day.
Disclaimer 1: My 1st and 2nd period classes are AWESOME. They work their tails off. But then... I have 3rd, 4th, and 5th...
Disclaimer 2: For those of you that don't know me, and can't imagine the tone of my voice, just know I adore these kids, and there is a great deal of love behind all my sarcasm. That being said, they still drive me nuts.

(Background noise: 10 conversations across the room)

ME: Ciara, stop texting. Put your phone away.
CIARA: Okay, hold on, let me just finish this text.
ME: No, really. Right now. Come on, I don't want to pay taxes to take care of your future children.
CIARA: Wait, I don't get it.
ME: Exactly. Come on, class. You have 10 sentences to write.
AT LEAST TEN STUDENTS: Ms. B, that's too many!
ME: It's been 40 minutes!
FIVE STUDENTS WHO STILL ARE that CLUELESS: I know! That's not enough time!
ME: You just need to finish five before the bell.
DANA: (to another kid) Boy, don't tell me to %^$-ing, I'll kick your Mother-F&^%
ME: Deep breaths, Dana, sit down.
RANDOM STUDENT WHO I DIDN'T GIVE THE PLEASURE OF A RESPONSE: Ms. B, do you have paper? I don't feel like looking in my binder for mine.
ME: And Keshawn, you need to sit down. Stop hitting people.
KESHAWN: Why do you get to walk around?
ME: Because I have my diploma.
JOQUANA: OOOOOOOOOOOH!
ME: Really, Joquana? Come on, sweetie, was that necessary?
JOQUANA: Yes, actually it was.
ME: Give me one reason why.
JOQUANA: Because if I don't say "OOOOOOOOOOH!" at least three times a day, I feel retarded.
ME: Hm. I don't even know what to say to that.

  1. Oh my, that is one challenging class!
And I didn't think for one second that you don't adore those kids; you wouldn't go th the bother of making raps for them otherwise.
I like your "Because I have my diploma" line..maybe another thing that I'll borrow from you!

  3. Hi Heather! Since I work with teens too but I'm not in the classroom, this was fun (with a tinge of sad) to read. Oh man, texting in class. I don't know what I'd do about that if I was a teacher. If teens are in class and all their friends are in school too, who are they texting during the school day? Thanks for sharing!
